Forta FDX 27 duplex – perfect for your heat transfer challenge

The new Outokumpu Forta FDX 27 provides a totally new stainless steel solution for applications where the formability of other duplex grades is not sufficient or limits design capabilities, such as in heat exchangers.

Ferritic-austenitic stainless steels, also referred to as duplex stainless steels, combine many of the beneficial properties of ferritic and austenitic steels. Due to the relatively high content of chromium and nitrogen, these steels offer good resistance to localized and uniform corrosion.

Why switch to Forta FDX 27?

A cost-effective alternative

Forta FDX 27 is comparable in cost to the 316/316L type stainless steel used most commonly in heat exchanger applications.

An added advantage is that its price shows reduced variability. This is due to the low level of alloying elements such as nickel and molybdenum that can be subject to significant variations in price.

A boost in performance

Switching to Forta FDX 27 can enable engineers to boost the performance of their existing designs without major modifications – with one PHE manufacturer already reporting a 50% increase in maximum operating pressure.

Forta FDX 27 can also help create new designs with reduced plate or tube wall thicknesses that reduce cost and save weight – opening up new business possibilities, especially for applications such as offshore process equipment where weight and installation footprint are critical considerations.

An easy changeover

In many cases, Forta FDX 27 is a straight swap for materials such as type 316/316L stainless steel, usually with no need for new or modified tooling – all that is required is some straightforward adjustment of process parameters.

Because tooling does not usually need modifying to use Forta FDX 27 manufacturers also have the flexibility to change back to their old material should their future needs change.

Samples readily available

Forta FDX 27 samples are available from stock in thicknesses of 0.6 mm, 1 mm, 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm. Samples in any thickness from 0.4 mm to 3.7 mm can also be supplied on request.

Our samples are supplied with a 2E finish – cold rolled, heat treated and, mechanically descaled.

Proven capability

The Shanghai Heat Transfer Equipment Co., Ltd. (SHPHE) has adopted Forta FDX 27 for the plates used in the construction of heat exchangers. A particular success is for two customers using plate heat exchangers (PHEs) operating at a design pressure of 2.5 MPa in district heating applications. Read the SHPHE case study here.
