Your waste can be a treasure

The steel industry has adopted new technologies and energy sources to support its transition towards more sustainable practices. The greatest innovations are expected in the field of energy. Forerunners are pushing efforts to achieve breakthroughs in hydrogen-based technologies, electric arc furnaces, carbon capture and storage, plasma technology, circular economy, and recycling as well as in biomass and biofuels.

At Outokumpu, the latest findings are seen in the raw material innovation biocoke. By turning forest industry waste into energy in ferrochrome production, it abolishes the need to cut down more trees. Biocoke could replace the coke we currently import and use in our stainless steel production and thus, cut carbon dioxide emissions significantly – supporting the Finnish and European energy and climate targets within the next 10 years.
