Outokumpu has a long history in mining. At one time, we operated 40 mines and research sites across Finland. These mines have since been closed in accordance with the legislation of the time, and we still hold responsibilities for some of them. We continue monitoring, remediation, and other post-closure activities at former mines where we retain obligations.
However, we do have one active mine in Kemi, which is the only chrome mine in the EU. The extracted chrome is used in the production of stainless steel.
We carry out post-closure activities at our closed mines because we have environmental responsibilities for certain sites, as required by law – and because we believe in honoring the legacy of our mining history. This work began when the first mines were closed and will continue for as long as necessary.
We are committed to making this work more visible and improving dialogue with those living near the mines and others interested in the topic. As part of our strategy focused on circular economy, we also assess the mineral potential of mining waste areas at closed sites together with our partners.
The green transition and ambitious climate goals in Finland and across Europe require critical minerals and raw materials for low-emission solutions, such as stainless steel. The purpose of the mining industry is to secure these materials and supply chains while fostering local growth. Mines located in Finland and opportunities for further mineral processing support these goals, with circular economy playing a key role in achieving them.
2025 >
Our strategic and long-term goal is to restore closed mines where we still have responsibilities, based on research, and to reduce their environmental impact. In 2025, we will focus especially on five closed mines: Enonkoski, Kotalahti, Hammaslahti, Vihanti and Telkkälä.
We have published more detailed information about the goals and actions for these mines in Finnish both on the Finnish mine program site and on our web pages.
Parhain terveisin,
Outokumpu
