Sölvesborg Bridge
ICON #42
In the picturesque town of Sölvesborg, located near the southern tip of Sweden, a remarkable structure stands as a testament to modern engineering and care for the environment—the Sölvesborg Bridge. This eye-catching pedestrian and cycling bridge not only connects the heart of Sölvesborg to the new residential district of Ljungaviken Listerlandet but also sets a record as the longest of its kind in Europe. Completed in 2012, the bridge is designed to be both an attractive landmark and a vital part of the region’s infrastructure for generations to come.
The Sölvesborg Bridge is a striking example of how thoughtful design can harmonize with nature. Project leader Stål & Rörmontage aimed to create a structure that would withstand the test of time while minimizing its impact on a nearby bird conservation area. Three elegant arches define the bridge's design, creating a striking silhouette against the sky. These graceful curves provide essential support, while making the bridge a captivating focal point as its sleek lines gleam in the sunlight and beautifully frame the horizon.
The choice of construction material was critical; it needed to be strong, durable, and cost-effective , while also minimizing its impact on the local ecosystem. Outokumpu duplex stainless steel fulfilled the criteria, thanks to its strength, corrosion resistance and low carbon footprint . This material was used in the bridge’s main components, ensuring it remains visually appealing while resilient against environmental factors.

Unlike some other materials, stainless steel is remarkably low-maintenance, minimizing the need for frequent repainting or repairs—an essential advantage for the local environment. Its durability ensures that the bridge can weather even the harshest conditions, potentially providing the community notable cost savings over its lifespan.
With its sleek design and robust materials, the Sölvesborg Bridge exemplifies how thoughtful engineering leads to structures that stand the test of time. As it continues to serve the community, the Sölvesborg Bridge is a striking reminder of the importance of investing in long-lasting solutions for a brighter future.
